In 2022, the SIA published its second “Biometrics in identity: Building Inclusive Futures and Protecting Civil Liberties” report. Drawing on this report, this presentation provides a holistic view of today’s biometric landscape, identifies key issues and drivers, offers best practices and recommendations for biometric identity systems.

Thilo Utermark is a senior product manager at Veriods GmbH
located in Munich / Germany.
He takes care about the issues of biometric requests related
to customers and the market belonging to typical situations in
eGovernment. Therefore he focuses on all aspects of
hardware, software and consultant topics to the
needs and requirements of states or their governments.

The last years Thilo was frequently working as a product manager. He
focused to
security branch, predominantly in the field of access control. He was responsible in
developing, launching and monitoring a wide branch of products belonging to Biometric,
RFID or IR Technology. Last time as PM he was also responsible for a browser based security information management and organization system (PSIM) which manages all
different devices belonging to security software entities such as intruder detection, CCTV, fire detection, access control…. Handling more than 700 different inter faces to known subsections was one of his most successful challenges.

Trust Services and Digital ID Solutions

Establishing trust has always been a core task for ID document providers as well for digital services and their environment. Public Key Infrastructures build the basis for many of these well-established systems. Solutions like blockchains now challenge these PKI based systems and the problems caused
by their centralized nature. A closer look shows that the majority of cases decentralized solutions are used to improve process compliance and auditability by adding log and communication layers but very often still rely on central roots of trust. In the digital identities sphere on the other hand the
decentralized concept of Self Sovereign Identities gained much attention during the last years. We will provide an in depth analysis of the trust relationships in the SSI ecosystem and will answer the following questions:

1. How to ensure reliable user binding of credentials.
2. How to protect sensitive data against unauthorized verifiers.
3. How to avoid data collection, tracking and correlation on the verifier side.

The presented solutions will combine centralized and decentralized components that could help governments to build the foundation for a digital ID ecosystem based on SSI principles that respects the government’s responsibility to provide the citizen’s core ID while having the flexibility to enable the establishment of digital solutions in the governmental and the private sector.

Since 2019 she is working in Product Management, responsible for different innovation topics with a strong focus on accompanying and analysing the evolution of SSI.

Alexander Winnen

Alexander Winnen is Product Manager at Veridos for PKI related products with more than 25 years of experience in the IT security sector and 20 years in the special segment of Public Key Infrastructures. Besides product management his focus is on solution design of PKI systems and their implementation in projects.

Protecting ID Systems in the Quantum Era

Jörg Fischer is a Fellow Innovations at Bundesdruckerei GmbH in Germany. He works on security and ID document systems and drives developments for digital identity ecosystems. Before joining Bundesdruckerei’s innovation team in 2006, he worked at Samsung’s European Research Center in the field of display technologies and organic electronics. Jörg Fischer studied communications engineering and has more than 20 years of experience in industrial research and development.

Michael Schalk is a Senior Product Manager for Artificial Intelligence at Veridos. After starting his career in the area of security printing, he spent more than seven years focusing on the digital transformation of the mechanical engineering industry in different roles with various international stations. Before joining Veridos, he most recently managed a project of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the VDMA, in which he supported SMEs in the use of artificial intelligence.
He joined Veridos in 2021 where he is responsible for the development of AI Use Cases as well as the operationalization of Veridos’ AI strategy.

Claudia Schwendimann has been working in the identity and security document business for twenty years and is the CEO of OeSD International, a daughter company of the Austrian State Printing House since 2007.
She advises governments of different, mainly developing countries on how to effectively manage identity and civil registration and how to accommodate the special needs in ePassport and eID projects based on ICAO specifications.
Claudia served as the Austrian ISO representative for Travel Documents to ICAO and was contributing in various official roles to the electronic Travel Document development (member of ICAO’s Technical Advisory Group, member of ICAO’s Implementation and Capacity Building Working Group, chairperson of the Expert Advisory Committee of FastPass Project for Automated Border Management, member of Intergraf’s Committee of Experts).
She studied Sinology in Vienna and Beijing and received her Executive Master’s degree in Business Administration from California State University, Hayward and she graduated as Master of Law and Economics at Imadec University, Vienna
